Adopt-a-River Bank: An Eagle Scout Project

by Zach Marsden

Growing Seedlings, first viewI started my Eagle Scout project in December of 2006. I planted native vegetation along the river bank, down by the benches in August Derleth Park in Sauk City.

Growing Seedlings, second viewI started to grow most of the plants I needed in the high school’s new green house, but I had problems and they did not seem to want to grow. So now, a year later, I’m doing much better. A good portion of the plants, about 1500, will be purchased from Bluestem Farm in Baraboo, with help from a grant I received earlier this year from Alliant Energy. The rest of about 1200 plants I’m trying to grow myself and they seem to be doing better than last year (see pictures below). Thanks to River PAL and Jon Cody, who I have been working very closely with, for offering the grant to me. I plan to get most of it done before the summer and finish everything before the fall. riverbank restoration area

Editor's Note: This third photograph was taken of the restoration location just before the Village of Sauk City repaired the river bank. Zach has taken on the project of putting native vegetation in this area and the second area just down from it.
